Arts and materials

The Belle-épine cushion is made in jacquard fabric that features an all-over botanical motif, it has been woven using natural fibers by an expert Venetian artisan dating back to the 18th century. Its contrasting trim and luxurious borders add an ornamental element to any room. The cushion is sold with its insert and the cover can be removed for cleaning.

The use of both cotton and viscose thread creates a contrast between glossy and matt finishes, adding depth to the pattern. This weaving is only achievable on a jacquard loom, which creates embossed effects on the material. It took several trials before Cristina Celestino's color palette could come to life.

Inspiration

Designed by Cristina Celestino, the Belle-épine cushion's fabric takes its inspiration from the fruit and vegetable display, as well as the arabesque motifs, found on Henri Matisse's Intérieur aux Aubergines painting from 1911, widely considered one of the artist's most decorative works.

Cristina Celestino

For the permanent collection Intérieur aux aubergines, Maison Matisse was inspired by Henri Matisse's eponymous painting from 1911 and collaborated with the Italian designer Cristina Celestino. This choice seemed self-evident. The designer’s world is perfectly adapted to that of the artist’s painting in this particularly decorative canvas where the planes deeply superimpose each other.
